The Twelve Step Program

The 12 Step Program is arguably the best way for addicts and alcoholics to get well, maintain sobriety and pursue a enriched life. There are other ways of getting well too, yet the 12 step program has worked for millions and proved to be highly successful.

The 12 Step Program was originally constructed by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, the founders of AA. It is now used in many other recovery meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous and more.

 The twelve steps:

1. To admit you are powerless over alcohol – that your life has become unmanageable.
2. To come to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Make a decision to turn your will and your life over to the care of God as you understand Him.
4. Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourself.
5. Admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of your wrongs.
6. You are entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Make a list of all persons we had harmed, and become willing to make amends.
9. Make direct amends to such people, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continue to take personal inventory, and when you are wrong, promptly admit it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve your conscious contact with God
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, you try to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all your affairs.

‘Willpower and inner spirit’

It is about admitting you can no longer control your drinking or using – you are powerless. No amount of willpower will help. Acceptance is key. Furthermore, it is not about religion but about finding some inner spirit and spiritual help. Looking at your wrongs and character defects, addressing these, making amends to those you have harmed and putting the past behind you is key. Finally, it is about helping other alcoholics and addicts to share in this new fulfilling way of life.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is a successful program for many. Don’t be closed minded. If you have a problem, give it a try. Attend a local AA or NA meeting for example – you will find one near you on every day of the week, especially if you live in a reasonably well populated area.
